One Little Word, One Big Head Trip

All it takes sometimes is one little word to undermine all the success you have accomplished. That’s what has happened to a friend of mine. Long story short, she made the decision to get healthy and she lost 50 pounds. 5 – 0. I’m so proud of her because she made a commitment to herself and stuck with it. Then the other day she had a doctor’s appointment and he told her that according to her BMI she was obese.

Yep. That little word packs a mighty powerful punch.

As quickly as that word slipped out of his mouth, all that my friend had accomplished disappeared. She could only focus on the word “obese”.

Of course I told her that she’s done an amazing job and that she should be so proud of herself for what she’d done. I told her not to focus on that word. Just keep going forward and that BMI scale can kiss her ass.

On Sunday, my friend put her dog in her car and went on a long hike. It was a good one because she was sore the next day. I was glad to see that she was rebounding from the trauma of that one little word.

I’m 22 years older than my friend and I’ve found that certain words can play with my head, but I’m finding that their effect has a shorter lifespan. I guess some things do get easier as we age.

New Year, New Gear March Reveal

New Year, New Gear, hosted by Nicole at Apples and Arteries is the first exchange I’ve participated in and it was so much fun! I had fun shopping for the blogger I was paired up with and I had fun opening the package my partner sent me.

Nicole started this exchange at the beginning of the year because after participating in some other exchanges in 2012 she had fun (a key word with exchanges) meeting fellow bloggers and readers. She decided to host her first exchange at the beginning of the year because this is the time of the year when we set new fitness and health goals, and who doesn’t love new stuff to help reach those goals? This healthy chick certainly does and it appears many other healthy chicks do because Nicole has continued to host New Year, New Gear for the past couple of months.

When I found out that I would be exchanging with Nicole, she sent me some info. The info included the workouts she does, the new gear she needs and size. With that list I went shopping.

One bag is for me and the other is for Nicole. To see what I got her, you’ll have to visit her blog.

I also had to provide Nicole with the same information about my workouts, needs and size.

Here’s the package I got in the mail. It was like my birthday!

I opened the package and found this great tank top for my workouts. I love the swirls of color.

There was also a headband (never have enough of those) and shoe laces (love pink).

And lastly, there was a little note (adorable dog) for me.

This was a great experience and I look forward to participating again. And I can’t wait to check out what the other bloggers have received in their exchanges.

If you are interested in participating in next month’s New Year, New Gear exchange please click here and you’ll get all the info. Just a quick note, the limit is $15.00, so it’s not all that expensive.

Have a fit day!

Obsessive or Healthy?

Some may call my love of exercising a healthy obsession.

Others may call my vast collection of exercise dvds/videos obsessive.

Tomato. Tomatoe. Healthy. Obsessive.

Sticks and stones can hurt my bones (but if I have good bone density from working out…), but names will harm me. By the way, labeling people is not very nice.

I am a collector of exercise dvds/videos. And I have a vast collection I found out the other day when I got a jump start on spring cleaning.

Spread out on my kitchen’s island was my fitness journey. From the very first ones I purchased over 13 years ago to the most recent ones purchased in January. It was like looking through a time capsule from where I began to where I am today.

Not in the collection were a Richard Simmons Sweatin’ to the Oldies, a Cory Everson sculpting video, a Denise Austin aerobic workout and a step dvd that I can’t recall the name of – it was from a workout show that was on early in the morning and the guy on the show was named Kendall. I loved that video.

These are the two workouts that really started my fitness journey. The Firm. Susan Harris was the lead instructor and still to this day I could do the Volume 1 workout in my sleep. Once a week, every Monday I did that workout. The floorwork is unbeatable, your legs don’t feel a burn, they are on fire. Squats, overhead presses and cardio segments that suck the breath out of you. It’s an awesome workout. I love that workout.

I became a Firm Believer and I still own many, many Firm workouts. Though I did thin our my collection of Firm workouts but I kept the ones I truly enjoy. I also pulled out some other workouts for various reasons. But the number one reason was because I hadn’t done the workout in a long time. Sure, I may go through periods when I’m all about dance aerobics or power-walking (Leslie Sansone) but there were a lot of workouts that I hadn’t done in ages. There are new workouts I want and I need space to for them.

This thinning out of my collection also gave me the opportunity to neatly organize my videos.

These aren’t just dvds/videos. Each has played a part in my fitness journey. From overweight and sedentary to healthier and active. With my interest in Pilates growing, I don’t know where I’ll be in another six months or year. I’m excited to find out and I hope that I’ll be sharing the journey with you.

No, It Didn’t…

Sadly, it did. I’m talking about the scale.

I stepped on the scale. And found I was up three pounds. On top of the two pounds I added a few weeks ago.

Not liking the number staring back up at me, I just stood there until the number disappeared and only lines showed. Thinking there had to be a mistake. Clearly the scale was wrong. I stepped off then stepped back on.

Now looking back, that was a big mistake. I should have quit while I was ahead.

I wasn’t up 3 pounds.

I was up 3 1/2 pounds. The scale added a half pound in a matter of seconds.

Seriously?

Ugh.

Of course I yelled at the scale. Then I yelled at myself. And there my day was set. I wasn’t sure what I was more angry at. The number on the scale? The fact that I didn’t try hard enough over the past few weeks to make exercise a priority or that I was, even in my 40s, calling myself a failure.

I thought by the time I hit my 40s I’d stop that type of behavior. That by now I’d be a fully evolved “40s is the new 30s” kinda gal who knows she has more to offer the world other than a slim size 4 figure.

Guess I was wrong. That behavior just doesn’t disappear when you hit a benchmark birthday. Maybe no matter what our age, we will still always hear that voice that judges us harshly but would never judge a friend in the same light. Hmmm.

But, maybe there is some hope. I found that mid-day I’d let go of my preoccupation with the scale incident and THAT number. And later in the evening, after I hit the treadmill for twenty minutes (all the spare time I had) and got the dogs out for a walk, I heard an amazing sentence from the most unlikely source.

The source? The Home Shopping Channel.

Seriously.

Heather Thomson was selling her Yummie Tummie line and she showed that inside a pair of leggings the inspirational saying “women should adore their bodies” was written.

Who would have thought that such profoundness would be discovered in a pair of leggings being sold on HSN.

I wonder if there are any sayings written inside the set of briefies I ordered. I’ll let you know.

Lesson of the day – Be kind to yourself and do as Heather Thomson (one of my favorite Housewives by the way) says – adore your body.

Three Items, One Goal

Spring is just days away and that means summer is just around the corner. It would be nice to slim down just a little. Just a few pounds and a few inches. This means there’s no more messing around, no excuses will be tolerated and I’m going to use my weekly Pilates class as the kick-off of my spring slimdown.

Hmm. Spring slimdown. I like that. 🙂

For a little bit of motivation, I pulled out three items that I want to fit into without feeling like I was stuffed into them.

I love, love, love this skirt. Leopard print and a classic pencil skirt, it’s perfect with shirts, sweaters, cardigans and a great pair of pumps.

030713 026

This shirt has been a go-to for quite sometime. I really like the color and the ease of wear.

030713 021

Shorts. A necessary evil in the warmer weather. I’d like to feel more confident in them.

030713 028

On April 7th I am going to try them on and see how they fit. Then on May 7th I’ll have another fitting with them. Fingers crossed that in 2 months each item will be falling off of me. Okay, maybe that’s a little unrealistic. I’ll take “roomy”.

Maybe I’ll even put on a pair of my shorts and shirt with some wedges.

030713 022

Are you planning your own spring slimdown?

Adapting, Part Deux

Adapting hasn’t gone so well, the one and only workout I did was last Wednesday. But it’s only temporary and when I can get back on track to my regular workouts I have a spanking brand new piece of equipment. I’m beyond excited.

A little backstory first. For years I’ve wanted to exercise in the morning before heading out to work and I wanted the workouts to be cardio. I can’t handle weights at 5:45 am. Simply not possible. But the treadmill is in our bedroom and won’t work for the G-Man. So I tried workout dvds but that didn’t work either, for some reason he heard me working out and I don’t want to disturb his sleep (I get cranky when he disturbs my sleep). Hmmm. I decided to give up on the dream. The dream of getting cardio done first thing and not have to juggle it at night with everything else.

Now fast forward to Thursday night. My husband decided that he wanted an exercise bike. We found the perfect place to keep it, tucked into a corner in the living room. It is whisper quiet. Quiet like a church mouse. And I love it.

I’m not so in love with its seat. Ouch. I just ordered padded bike shorts from Amazon. They should be here in a few days and I can ride in comfort and quiet.

This Healthy Chick is so very happy right now. I can get three cardio workouts done in the morning and the fourth will have to be in the evening because I want to use the treadmill. I will be able to do my strength workouts also after work. Looks like I’ll be adapting in a whole new way in about a week or two when things get back to normal but until then, I’ll at least have my bike workouts bright and early.

To take a peek at the bike we bought, click here and you will be directed to ProForm’s website. One of the many cool things about this bike is that it came with a one year free membership to iFit which I am going to activate this weekend. I can’t wait to tr the iFit workouts and share with you how I like them.

Have a great Sunday!

Looking for Something Different

At the end of the episode of the season premiere of Smash, Derek told Karen to find “something different” since their Broadway play Bombshell looked to be dead in the water. I’ve been looking for something different with my workouts.

I tried a yoga class. I really enjoyed it. But I wasn’t completely comfortable in the class.

I tried a Pilates class. I loved it. I opted not to take a second session because of my work schedule but now since things are settling down a bit, I’m thinking about signing up for another 6 week session.

But even with the prospect of going to a Pilates class once a week, I want something different. I think I’m looking to step outside of my comfort zone.

I’ve found two workouts that definitely would push me outside of my comfort zone.

Krav Maga and Crossfit.

Krav Maga Street Defense is the hand-to-hand self-defense and fitness system developed for use by the Israeli Defense Forces. No argument there that it is something different, right?

Crossfit is a strength and conditioning program that is used by many law enforcement agencies, fire departments and military organizations. Yes, that is something different.

Then I’ve been considering horseback riding. I used to take weekly riding lessons and I have occasionally thought about going back to riding. It was a great inner thigh workout.

It turns out I have a few options. While I’m curious about CrossFit, I’m a little leery of the intensity of the workout. Same concern with the Krav Maga.

The Pilates and horseback riding are looking pretty good to me know. It would be nice to have some new workouts for the spring. Maybe that’s the whole reason I’m looking for new workouts. Spring. Warmer temps and longer days.

Am I the only one looking for something different to shake up my workout? What workout would you like to try this spring?
